“…Blue…I need a friend not an enemy. Worry bout my future…”

It’s funny how you hear, and get messages that you want to hear, when you want to hear them. I say this because the above message resonates more than some high school or college age girl who follows me on twitter, that posted a lyric from Goapele’s “Closer,” I’m not R. Kelly, sorry, at the same time that the song was playing on my iPod, or the quote another friend offered, “daydreaming through most of the day, composing songs and poetry in your head.” And another, “Show a plenty of genuine love, and watch how loved you’ll feel in return.”

I woke up, with a song in my head, wondering whether I should try that, yet, I didn’t commit that song to paper as I chose to catch a few more Z’s before heading into the office. So with songs, the urge to write something, and other mind numbing items, I just offer something. Plus this neck thing going on with me right now. (by the way, typing the word ‘thing’ goes in a nice circle)

I know I sent a flutter to your heart,
A smile,
Some care,
The bit of what I offer,
My hope, and wish for you,
You tempt my heart, but right now we’re far apart,

The manuscript Blue Lines is the fictional coming of age narrative of a young California woman Key Yemaya Walker, and her 2 year growing journey through school, love, and life period piece, written by Kenneth Suffern, Jr., taking place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between the years of 1997 – 1998. Loosely based on true events, and experiences during that time, told through the eyes and voice of the main female protagonist, a freshman first attending the school.

Let the world change you…
…and you can change the world

This quickly evolved from something that was said to me. Hopefully the parts of it come off

…She said, “y’all are visual, so u fall 4 it everytime…if you don’t, there’s a problem…”

Flashes of your flesh,
Your skin shared,
My back of finger,
Runs against your,
Long buttery neck,
My breath warming your anticipation,
Cocked to the side, I inhale your essence,
There’s nothing like the first taste of your supple skin,
Slowly I reach to pull your face toward me, your mole…

*Ding, Ding* Damn iPhone waking me up, damn text.

I’m the king of rock, there is none higher
Sucker MC’s should call me sire
To burn my kingdom, you must use fire
I won’t stop rockin’ till I retire

Now we rock the party and come correct
Our cuts are on time and rhymes connect
Got the right to vote and will elect
And other rappers can’t stand us, but give us respect

They called us and said we’re gettin iller
There’s no one chiller
It’s not Michael Jackson and this is not Thriller
As one def rapper, I know I can hang
I’m Run from Run-DMC, like Kool from Kool and the Gang
Roll to the rock, rock to the roll
DMC stands for devastating mic control
You can’t touch me with a ten foot pole
And I even made the devil sell me his soul Continue reading →

Blue Lines Blog: Fiction – Blue Lines excerpt from Twenty-Six: Clearing for Revelations

My mind has been so scattered lately, and though I have “inspiration,” and a muse fueling my thoughts, I’d rather escape from that right now, because lack of sleep and repetition can easily lead down a path of saying something I should not currently.  This excerpt is from Blue Lines: Chapter 24: Clearing For Revelations (pp262- 264).

The following is an amended version of one of my favorite scenes in Blue Lines, and part of the sample that I extracted the one time that I shopped the unprepared manuscript through a friend.  It follows a major arc from the previous chapter, however my aim for this scene was to show my female protagonist in an form of beauty that was not a normal description with her trying to prepare herself as such.  It takes place in the late morning while she sits outside her dorm.

Keypsiia huddled on the cement stairwell and her mind became lost in the icy shower.  She stared at the puddle as the raindrops augmented its area on the red brick walkway.  Her distorted reflection made her heart giggle.  Peaceful moments as such were what she longed for.  Her release was found alone in the splendor of nature.  Her lips grew into a wide grin as she mindlessly became consumed by the weather.  The wind whipped loose strands of her hair that were finding freedom from her Scünci, but she was unconcerned.  She pulled the oversized jacket closer to her body and her mind drifted as she continued to watch as the puffs of her warm breath escaped into the cool air of the wintry day.

“Hi Keypsiia, how have you been,” a familiar, but timid voice broke her solace. Continue reading →

Kind of cheating on this one, she’s on thej cusp. And that accent…a Black woman with an English/British accent…sexy.

What I Learned Sundays – 6/25/11 Just Let Go Finished On the iPad

The rain came down with enough intensity to saturate my adidas polo, but it was needed to cool the steam that was emitting from my body. I can only imagine the mist rising into the damp evening. Simple mistakes, that YOU could’ve made, and I may have smiled or not been worried about, were the same small mistakes that became so frequent, that they reminded me why she and I arrived here. But we’re all here.
The drops ran down my face like tears, although my maddening changes, may make me feel bad, but crying is one of the farthest things from my mind. I agree, that the Men don’t cry farce is just that, but with the amount of loss these last few years, and with certain situations, it’s so much easier to just become ‘comfortably numb.’
My melancholy walk to the car, saddened me because as she was doing the things that ultimately drove me back to YOU. I thought silently about how could I simultaneously be empathetic when YOU needed it, and be angry with her at the same time.
I thought of the words ‘fair,’ ‘just,’ ‘right,’ and ‘deserve.’

This last week has been interesting, eye opening, saddening, maddening, happy…I guess just life. Actually, the last 2 months. Except for one bad decision, I am lucky/fortunate to have be able to experience all of it.

-Interesting to find out my Dad was married, via text.
-Thank God for my cousin.
-My nieces will be the biggest fans of the now defunct Atlanta Thrashers, they have enough gear now to carry on the fight.
