The sun was peaking in the the evergreen and deciduous foliage, and a slight breeze brought a nice morning chill. Having already put work for the day behind, I’m always on the clock, I sat back in the back years, sipping Starbucks coffee, happily alone in solitude. My mind was free and clear, and my soul was touching upon something I had missed since childhood.
I remember the youthful days of East Point, Atlanta, and New Jersey, long before Atlanta became the quickest metropolitan city to the level of it’s pollution, and in those brief moments between playing outside, sitting quietly looking out our windows to the backyard. The sky, such a rich and clean power Blue, and clean. As I sat out, I saw that sky here in Sacramento. Now, by no means does that mean I want to move out to the city, it isn’t conducive to my lifestyle, and my present, and future (writer) profession, this is more so to relay the exquisite feeling of peace, tranquility…almost an escape from reality, both those of my real and work lives. For someone who is unable to be still, it was that opportunity to not move, sit alone, and not think about anything but the beauty that was here before me.
Happily separated from all encompassing sensory filling items like cable, the Internet, my phones…it was just me, a nice breeze, and fleeting drops of straw from the tree, as I was quietly content in my favorite state, California.
I was asked:
“Do you want to keep the car?”
“No.”
Amid a brief break of solace asked, “aren’t you bored?”
“No.”
I had something, that I had not had in quite some time. Nothing money, a person, or any other factor could offer me. After all this time, I met ‘Peace’ again, and if it took a plane flight to the opposite side of the country, if it was simply sitting outside, and if it was some brief detachment, then that is quite fine with me.
What I Learned:
Some fleeting peace.
The manuscript Blue Lines is the fictional coming of age narrative of a young California woman Key Yemaya Walker, and her 2 year growing journey through school, love, and life period piece, written by Kenneth Suffern, Jr., taking place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between the years of 1997 – 1998. Loosely based on true events, and experiences during that time, told through the eyes and voice of the main female protagonist, a freshman first attending the school.
