“Vascular”
Sitting across the table from you, a lifetime away,
Your smile, turned halfway,
Your thoughts, about whether I do,
I want to hear your voice, but don’t want to speak,
Your abashed heart, searching me for thoughts,

We ask, where is your heart,

Jaded, you wonder why I look away,
You remember my words spoken freely,
Scared of my selective words now,
Our scents masked by food,
Collective solace broken by order,

Lost, what happened to the fire in our hearts,

Appetite spoiled by the silence in our words,
Quiet pleasantries that mean nothing,
The question of what and why,
Your lips pursed now,

I wasn’t really sure of what was around this time last year. So much time has passed. First I thought of Little Dragon’s “Twice,” or “Scribbled Paper,” however I settled on this standard covered by Roy Hargrove.
