Last week I thought that I had completed my writing for my friend’s wedding. When I was asked to speak during the ceremony I was honored, but I was not sure what to read. Did they want me to present one of the pieces I had previously written for them? Did they want something new? Did they simply want me to offer a few words?
Saturday led to my taking time alone, and as I contemplated my decisions I began to put together a framework of the piece…I was thoroughly unsatisfied with the exception of the opening stanza that summed it up. As I walked on the beach, I forwarded the officiant Yas the previous writings. The piece is a groom speaking to his bride. The lines that stuck out to me were: “My Love, Is not in your beauty, it’s in your flaws, My Love is perfect in your imperfections.” It took some long walks through thress beaches…and some soul searching to complete the piece. However, the piece itself did not satisfy me. It wasn’t until Yas said that it was “dope.” At that point, I had to go forward with it.
