Late Text Tuesdays – Lyrics From Pearl Jam’s “Black”

I had two different concepts of something to write this week, however as time escaped me, I look to pull something from Blue Lines, that captured some of the ideas in the latter piece I wanted to write. When perusing my manuscript, I happened upon the scene at the fictional World Wide Lounge (based on Atlanta’s now defunct Yin Yang Cafe) were during a pivotal conversation/argument between Keypsiia Walker and Blue Hurt early in their friendship, after his poetry reading.
Words are powerful, and the song amazes my because of such. For one to ask these questions of another seems out of place, and direct, but many expect to get these answers, without the questions being asked.
This song is a song that I hold very close to my heart, though the tone seems sad or grim, I actually used elements of the piece during an extremely important recommendation. And it’s my karaoke go to song.

To be fair, Eddie Vedder explained it as such, “It’s a harsh one, because then your truest one is the one you can’t have forever.” I’d hat eto agree with that.

“Black”
Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard

Hey, oh
Sheets of empty canvas
Untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me
As her body once did
All five horizons
Revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed
Has taken a turn

Older post from my manuscript Blue Lines, blank mind today.

“IF”
K.S. circa 1999
…If I told you that I loved you,
could you love me back, do you love,
If I told you that I loved you,
what would it mean to you, what would it be
If I told you that I loved you
would I know who you are would you know me,
I don’t want to lose what we have,
or is it that I want something for us to have,
If I told you that I loved you,
would it destroy ‘us.’

Deep in the steaming jungle
The eerie sound of the voodoo drums tell us that
This is the night

[Witchdoctor]
My confess
We sinners lord
Dez only 1

[Chorus]
Book you got cooked (x3)
God sent you some warriors
Plus we tellers of the stories
(2x)
Book you got cooked (x2)

[Witchdoctor]
Check it out, uh
If in this life
I strive to please Him
In this day and night
I’m not always right
Even when I’m wrong
You should be afraid to anger Him
Cause you could be gone
Him don’t need us
It’s the other way round
Do you know what I’m talking about
When I say Him, clown?
You can’t look at nobody
And say that’s Him
Cause He’s invisible
Yet visible, this is critical
Relying on our own abilities you lose
You need him

I distorted as much as I could, because though I wanted a picture to be this post, I was resolved not to. Time left, therefore I had to. It is more than beauty.
