Opening with a very brief excerpt from Blue Lines Chapter 13: Beauty In Blue And White. (currently page 135)

“Blue closed his eyes, and she understood that he knew the truth in her simple words. Exhaling, he looked toward the idyllic hues of the orange and red leaves that still hung on to the last life of the fleeting summer. He knew that on the eve of their passing, a virgin love was being born between to souls who were occupying the right space at the perfect time. With Keypsiia’s girlish grin still wide, she closed her eyes and looked skyward to accept the warmth of the sun that seemed to caress her. She smiled at the emancipation of her words, and with thoughts of the frightening, unknown love that separated them from the world now.”

Looking back at these moments between these two semi-fictional characters, an 18 year old young woman, and 20 year old young man, the innocence of this time is apparent. Both lacking in experience, and idealistic in what the future holds, and in this instance, what it holds, insofar as “love,” their “love.” A “love,” not yet spoiled by bad decisions, broken and devastated hearts, realizations that these concepts that we believe at this young age, have the opportunity to be proved wrong. “Love…” these are also the transcribed words of a young man, still in that age at that time, far different from thoughts, beliefs, and knowledge now. The problem is, when at this age you a) don’t know the difference of what you “knew” then, but learned along your travels; and b) fail to take heed of the now, versus the then.

When you look at life/events/etc., many things happen for a reason, finding that reason is a challenge in the process. What do I mean by that, well let me first preface, this post has had many directions, however working the weekend, opened a few directions, while challenging my focus in writing this post. To regain my focus, I notice repetition, I notice new experiences, and I notice the past, now repetition continues, as unhealthy as it is, new has reared its beautiful head again.

I will start with the most interesting tidbits that I learned this week. Through facebook, twitter, BlackBerry messenger, twitter, my dealings with YOU etc. my cousin and I have grown extremely close. I’ve never really thought to look into my Cuban and Latin heritage, because it is basically clearcut…or more clear-cut. I found out that my maternal great-grandparents were a Cuban and a Spaniard. A revelation that makes me look in the mirror very differently, as a Hispanic, a Caribbean Cuban Hispanic, Spaniards are looked in a certain light, and to discover that I have Spanish heritage not through rape, pillage, but an actual marriage, and that my family roots on one of the Hispanic sides cleanly reach back to Spain. I hope this statement is understood, cleanly meaning that I have something tangible that I can trace. As a Cuban, I luckily can trace my roots through Cuban and back to Africa in some respect, now this adds a layer to added family knowledge. Cuzzo, we should have the first Family Reunion in Spain, that would be a shocker!!!

Foto Fridays – Visions Of Beauty (To Me) Options For Key (photos not mine)

Andy Allo, Blue Lines, Blue Lines Motion Picture, Blue Lines Movie Adaptation, Chapel Hill, Coker Arboretum, Key Yemaya Walker, Keypsiia Walker, Mara Hruby, North Carolina, Photography, UNC, UNC Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

This week’s edition of “Foto Fridays,” has more to do with my manuscript Blue Lines, than it does my photography. This post, originally started and intended for Friday 4/22/11, was supposed to include one piece of my photography, but in working on it, it will stick solely with the primary pieces that were meant to be featured in the post.

Mara Hruby: (Youth and Innocence)
The following picture effectively portraying a candid photo (whether it is or not). Her natural face, caught in a state, not smiling, not frowning with an innocent face speckled with freckles and wide young eyes. No makeup, just her natural face. Not having knowledge of her classical training, this may embody my protagonist Keypsiia better than any actress choice or model, or woman I may have seen in passing. As I have said in prior posts, during the writing process Keypsiia, as a character, began to become less of the woman she was crafted from, and she began to look less like that woman as she evolved into her own character within my work. This photo also emotes her wide-eyed youth. As I look at this photo and see Keypsiia as she sits outside in the rain the day after the banquet in Blue Lines.

Andy Allo: (Trained and Refined)
As of late, Andy Allo is my preferred front-runner to play Keypsiia in a motion picture adaptation of my manuscript Blue Lines. Provided, I am published, popular, and the products is seen as such. I have work to do. With that being said, though not to compare or contrast the two subjects of this entry, there was more difficulty in finding a picture of Andy Allo that embodied that innocent, or candid picture. Andy’s training is suberb, and one can notice whether in a picture with a fan, or performing, she has the perfect smile and seems as if she cannot be taken off guard (it also means she can act, movie Keypsiia…I see it). The selected photo highlights her youthful face, a pout which gives more of a glimpse into the character than her glowing smile. I can briefly see her sitting in Coker Arboretum, with her hair pulled back in a puff, before Blue finds her sitting there, waiting to smile up at him.

The manuscript Blue Lines is the fictional coming of age narrative of a young California woman Key Yemaya Walker, and her 2 year growing journey through school, love, and life period piece, written by Kenneth Suffern, Jr., taking place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between the years of 1997 – 1998. Loosely based on true events, and experiences during that time, told through the eyes and voice of the main female protagonist, a freshman first attending the school.

What I Learned Sundays – Ruin (3/20/11)

“…you ruined me, I don’t want to settle for anything else…”

A quote you will see in both major Blue Lines Blog posts this week, but I will get to that in some time.  This week was eventful that the “e-mail” that I have been vaguely mentioning very often in these posts came in 2 very different incarnations over the last 3-4 weeks.  Both transmissions, said two totally different things.  Subsequently, after learning a new type of patience, I do feel that I still have much to learn, that the 2007 – 08 version of myself would have learned much quicker, or should I say that version of myself was more grounded.

Unfortunately, the message I received was shocking, as it was unexpected, and after the work I had put in, the level of surprise was that much more intense.  While I sat bewildered, shocked, surprised, angry, annoyed, saddened and depressed for a brief time, that was a first for me (the depression), my fight or flight responses were on edge, as I had previously scheduled plans, that I had a big role in making happen, therefore I could not disappear…for an evening I had to hide in a public setting, which was both fortunate (I was not left to my own devices to possibly sulk), and unfortunate (I needed some time to clear my mind and thoughts).

Luckily I was afforded time to reflect on the entire situation the day after.  As I sat back, with the information still freshly imprinted in my mind, I thought of how I was leaving my decisions to this one piece of information.  Yes, in part I had made other choices as they pertained to this piece of information, but instead of the plan being a direction I was heading in, it was contingent on the perceived answer/outcome…between BBM messages between a good friend and I, the overriding tone of the day was “focus.”  Items that crossed my mind, “my continuing process of getting in my way,” “decisions contingent on myself,” “alignment with my goals,” Blue Lines, my future.

Blue Lines Blog – Blue Lines, Blue Skies, Change, Escape, Music, and Smiles

Other than little bits easily expressed by limited facebook posts, or tweets, I haven’t really expressed many of my thoughts in long form in quite some while. Musically…yes, with the choice of a song. Songs, or anything matching with my current feelings at a given time. So here’s another attempt while playing Stevie Wonder’s Music Of My Mind.
Blue Lines – my manuscript that I began 12 years ago, it will always be the initial base of this blog until it’s date of publish, and until it is time to promote my future works. (more below regarding Blue Lines)
Blue Skies – sitting at the Cliff house at Golden Gate Park 1/20/11 staring into the Pacific Ocean, actually beginning that morning, as I peered out into the San Francisco sky. I thought of two very distinct concepts: 1) I was glad that although I love…and I mean LOVE the state of California, that I was glad/happy/content that I was Northern California, rather than L.A. to the south. Especially to experience the clear bay air, and the blue skies that reminded me so much of the smogless days of my youth in Atlanta, Georgia. It has been quite some time that I could remember a clean blue sky. The purity of waking up on a Saturday…the long blue days of the summer. In an unexplainable way, it was almost a religious or spiritual experience, although there were no specific thoughts referencing God or any particular religion or such. 2) Unlike a Hawai’i or tropical island, that this experience was “real,” in a city that I could live and do my work in, although I do not have plans moving in that directions. Well I sat there at the Cliff House, tired from the event the night before, focusing on seeing someone I consider a valued friend (that’s funny that I reconnected with two friends this past week, the aforementioned from school, and then a former intern who is now working in my/our industry and married with children), as I built upon strengthening relationships with the members of my organization all in attendance of this conference. “…you’re my heaven, you’re my hell…”
Can’t wait until next week. Holy crap how am I this musically lucky? Not since Joi covered Sade’s “Cherish The Day,” have I been this lucky musically, but Andy Allo covering Kanye’s “Lost In The World,” an interpolation of Bon Iver’s “Lost In The Woods,” simply amazing!!!

A3C, A3C Hip-Hop Festival, Andy Allo, Atlanta, FunkJazzKafe, Joi Gilliam, Kat Goduco, ONE MusicFest

I will admit this was my first time going. It reminded me of an outdoor expanded FunkJazzKafe mixed with ONE MusicFest. The event included live performers, D.J.’s mixing, a B-Boy breakdancing contest, and panels on the music industry. A cool event, I’ll have to start going in the future.

I skated over after work to peep Andy Allo’s first performance in Atlanta, but unfortunately she was not a part of it. I will also admit, I was surprised an artist like Joi Gilliam was not included.

All in all, I cannot complain, just bummed I missed out on seeing my homegirl Kat Goduco there, and missed meeting Andy Allo. But I have been beaten up over the last few weeks, had a prior engagement and couldn’t hang.
