What I Learned Sundays – Devolution Of Communication

I remember getting my first cell phone (that I was actually paying for) it was designed for it’s legitimate purpose as pay phones began to disappear, it was a secondary venue of staying in contact. I was amazed by the clarity of the communication in 2000 with the SprintPCS network, and may my first foray.

It was the SCH-3500. Back then, other than the Motorola StarTAC, phones were “cool-ish” but may not have had a special name like a RAZR, iPhone, or Droid. It allowed for expensive communication (which limited my use), was bulky (I never really used it while driving), an d provided that extension of communication if needed. The phone was always visible, and my friends and I set up our weekends with them, dates, late night calls/rendezvous were set up what have you, but at that time, it was more a tool, than a necessary piece of life/culture at the time. I even had data during a free trial, and sent an e-mail which was one of the most inconvenient and cumbersome undertakings ever.

After a few years, I upgraded to the SCH-9500, a phone that was in a Dr. Dre music video at the time. Coincidently, the 3500 had been giving me problems and was replaced at least two times since purchase. This was provided as the replacement. It added no additional capabilities, just a more “dependable” updated phone. My communication habits grew, and it was a grew conduit for long-distance calls, rather than expensive calls from a land line. I called out of town a lot, what can I say? Plus the ability of the phone to become local when you traveled was great to keep a broke guys bill down.

Not really needing the phone to communicate as much, but wanting an updated look, again, a friend offered their phone. The blue display was a cool and different, but still, it was simply a phone. I didn’t need a hulking blue BlackBerry, a full keyboard or any of those things. I did not even text, I can’t remember if that was going on then. I began to call the BlackBerry (that was the only real Smart Phone at the time) a leash, because it kept you connected at all times, and I had no desire to be “connected.” I had long since deleted accounts in Black Planet (2000) and had no want/need/desire to be on sites like that again. I was fine/grounded/private.

Being Stupid – I Really “Need” (Want) an New iPod

I love having my music on my iPod, but I quickly outgrew my 60GB’s the first year I had it (let’s not mention that the released the 80GB version for $50 less a month later). That 160GB is exactly what I need, but it is wasteful to buy another one, when my iPod works perfectly fine. I I have some emotional attachment, I used it when I would go on the road to research Blue Lines, or write in various Starbucks during my years writing or editing my manuscript.  Maybe I will give it to my friend looking for their first iPod???

Blue Lines Blog – The Douche-Bagging of America (Apple Had A lot To Do With It Or Perfect It)

Today’s America is a lot different than the one I grew up in, I state as I am starting this post on an iPad (as I’ve stated before, if this was not loaned and I had to buy it…I wouldn’t be on an iPad).  Back to my opening statement, that’s not an indictment on my age hearkening back to the good old days, but rather more of a so we have this new technology and we’re more assholes because of it.

Again, I can’t blame Apple for much of it’s creation, but more or less perfecting it.  My favorite two items are my iPod, and my iPhone.

Speaking of phones, I’ll give them a pass, because the advent of the mobile phone ushered in a new era of “douchery.” think about those people who used to walk around with the phone and a battery pack in what looked like a purse…really???  Most people couldn’t use them, because the rates were astronomical, but they made sure to carry them so that the entire world knew, “I have a mobile phone.” then as phones became smaller and slightly more affordable, more and more people had access to owning phones so that they could make this call, “’Hi,’ just wanted to say ‘Hi,’ you know this is costing me money.” Great job dumb ass, you really needed to say that???  Last year you said that from your work or home phone, or you just went by to say ‘hi,’ maybe got a happy ending.  Now, you just look silly. What I learned…

Sunday evenings will now be titled, What I learned Sundays, recapping the prior weeks events etc. This week’s entry, will be the last two weeks.

– Went to do karaoke for my girl Kat’s birthday, unfortunately didn’t get to do my song I signed up for, ran out of time.
– Did I mention it was “Yo Karaoke” at Pal’s Lounge and Joi Gilliam (your favorite singer’s favorite singer), my favorite female artist of all time was there…I even got a hug!!!
– I re- learned…common knowledge…that although their computers are garbage, Apple peripherals (not the moronic iPad) are the hottest guilty pleasures (iPod, iPhone).
– Google Maps on the iPhone is the $H!T!!! Continue reading →
