Giants won the Super Bowl, plus that whole Kony madness
Linsanity had New York on fire like wasabi
And you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about Blue Ivy
Congrats to Jay and B for adding to they crew
I mean why was y’all so shocked, ain’t that what married people do?
And I’m still in my hoodie cause this violence ain’t stopping
Hope we see justice for the youngin’ Trayvon Martin
And Nicki dissed the fans, bands a make ’em dance
We got that iPhone 5, and ran to Instagram
Brian Mcknight, dumbest song of the year
Let me show how your —– works, but he ain’t get no volunteers
Kim and Kanye, huh, had us all tripping
Yeah, Mary J. Blige was out here singing for chicken
Y’all slipping, man
Bath salt zombies was all over the tubes
Same sex marriages, yes, Obama would approve
Drake met Chris Brown with a bottle in between
D’Angelo came back, LeBron got that ring

Well excuse me, take a few minutes to mellow out
Your boy Skillz back on the mic to tell about
The year 2011, who else gonna spit it to you?
And since you keep asking, I guess (I’m gonna give it to you)

The year started off with predictions galore
With birds falling out the sky and fish washing ashore
Great! What a way to start the race
Then Gucci Mane gets an ice cream cone tatted on his face
Thinking about a face tat? Reconsider
Ciara got played by Rihanna on twitter
Kim K proved she could hardly sing
And we got caught up in the madness of Charlie Sheen
(#Winning!)
If you didn’t hear, Rebecca Black’s best day of the week?
Worst song of the year
And the quake left the coast of Japan in ruins
Y’all watched the royal wedding
Like you actually knew ‘em!

Blue Lines Blog – Book Review – Rosalyn Story’s More Than You Know

“Sometimes a good tune is all you got, boy; your best friend, your home…” From Rosalyn Story’s More Than You Know

Although it took longer than the time I had expected in reading it, I have finally finished the well written, and compelling More Than You Know, by Rosalyn Story.

To give back ground, she is my godmother’s cousin, and I had received an autographed copy of her book about three years ago, because of the knowledge of my writing a manuscript. While writing, I have stayed away from reading fiction, while I was in the process of working on and editing Blue Lines. I have always been afraid that someone else’s thoughts could end up in my work, and with the glut of bad “Black Fiction,” I’ve steered away from fiction.

While in D.C. for the inauguration in 2009, I was lucky enough to meet Rosalyn Story, and from our writers Wii night with her cousin/Cher Dancer/Author Jamal Story (12:34 A Slice Novel) to our laborious journey to and back from the Inauguration of Barack Obama (over 10 miles on foot) we had the opportunity to become friends. So when my godmother sent me the copy of Rosalyn’s new novel,  Wading Home I finally had to read the first one.

More Than You Know, is the well written late 1990’s story of a Kansas City couple Olivia and L.J. Tillman, surrounding buried secrets that threaten to destroy the fabric of their relationship. Taking place in the Midwest and New York, the story born in chaos, follows jazzman L.J.’s circuitous journey to return to the love he once knew. And the past secrets that he promised to hold dear to his heart for his entire life.

Blue Lines Blog – Reading Russell Simmons’ Memoir

I finished reading my second book in less than a month (previously Jay-Z Decoded), by Def Jam / Phat Farm / Baby Phat founder and business man, Russell Simmons’ (with Nelson George) 2001 memoir, Life And Def: Sex, Drugs, Money + God . Rather than critique, I would like to offer a summarized version of the “lessons” he offered at that stage of his life to that point to serve as a form of inspiration:
1. In any new business, someone has to have a vision. You may have investors. You may know the market exists. But you need a point of view on the business, a definite vision.
2. You are only as good as the people around you. You can have a powerful vision, but without a staff that can make it happen, its just a dream.
3. People aren’t good or bad – just smart or stupid. In other words, you must try to keep yourself open to people. Don’t be too judgmental. Don’t make snap judgments. Today’s asshole may be tomorrow’s innovator.
4. Don’t try to be all things to all people. Identify your core audience (community) and go from there.
5. Nothing happens the way it’s supposed to.

Next up to read is Rosalyn Story’s More Than You Know . A classical musician and writer that I was lucky enough to meet and actually share my 2009 Presidential Inauguration experience with, even our 10 mile walk.
The manuscript Blue Lines is the fictional coming of age narrative of a young California woman Key Yemaya Walker, and her 2 year growing journey through school, love, and life period piece, written by Kenneth Suffern, Jr., taking place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between the years of 1997 – 1998. Today family and family friend’s celebrate my father’s 75th birthday, the Platinum anniversary. It is amazing to think of all the things that he’s seen, experienced and done during that time.

He’s lived through World War II, served in Korea, was station and boxed in Japan. Saw Vietnam, 2 Gulf Wars. He saw the World Trade Center erected and saw the day that it fell.

Many things that we were taught through school he experienced, the Civil Rights movement and was around during the Black Panthers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. he saw the first man go to the moon, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy. Witnessed to U.S. Presidents go through impeachment processes. Saw Mandela jailed, and then freed and saw him speak in Atlanta at Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd stadium.
