Finally…

The first day I logged into social media, and created any profile was for my writing career. The main focus is my manuscript, Blue Lines.

Though it is not my manuscript Blue Lines, as of yet, I have finally published a piece that encompasses elements of my manuscript and the life and times, and experiences beyond. Many times I am nonplussed in my reactions, but I am happy that I did this.

I and nervous and proud of my electronic release of my collection of short and long form poems entitled, Under a Blue Sky: Selected Love Poems. It can be purchased in electronic form on Amazon.com.

Thank you for your support over the years, and your continued support.

The manuscript Blue Lines is the fictional coming of age narrative of a young California woman Key Yemaya Walker, and her 2 year growing journey through school, love, and life period piece, written by Kenneth Suffern, Jr., taking place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between the years of 1997 – 1998. Loosely based on true events, and experiences during that time, told through the eyes and voice of the main female protagonist, a freshman first attending the school.

Blue Lines Blog – Love At First Sight – Blue Lines Chapter 12: Chance – Excerpt

Blue Hurt, Blue Lines, Blue Lines Blog, Blue Lines Chapter 12: Chance, Bridgeport, Buckhead, Bulls, California, Chance, Chapter 12, Chapter 12: Chance, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Christmas, Connecticut, excerpt, fiction, Gerald, Holiday, Kenneth A Suffern Jr, Kenneth Suffern Jr, Key Yemaya Walker, Keypsiia Walker, Keypsiia Yemaya Walker, Lenox Mall, Love, Main Street, Michael Jordan, Mitch Richmond, MW, N.B.A., National Basketball Association, NBA, North Carolina, Photography, Prose, Romance, Sacramento, Sacramento Kings, Scottie Pippen, Tar Heels, Trumbull Mall, UNC, UNC Chapel Hill, University Of Bridgeport, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Westfield Trumbull

This Blue Lines excerpt is from Chapter 12: Chance. The scene takes place as our protagonist Key Yemaya Walker happens upon the antagonist Blue Hurt while he writes on a bus headed to the local mall. Though Blue Lines takes place in Chapel Hill at the University of North Carolina, the real life imagery starts with her chance meeting him on the bus, which was the public transit I and friends would take from the University of Bridgeport at the Main Street stop by our dorm Bodine Hall, to Trumbull Mall, now Westfield Trumbull. The mall used in the writing process was a amalgam of Trumbull Mall in Connecticut, and Lenox Mall in Atlanta, Georgia, or Buckhead rather.
As I always state, Blue Lines, is a piece of fiction that evolved from real events, places, and people, therefore elements of this selection, as well as the entire work contain real experiences, and events of the time period in which my manuscript takes place. I’ll be honest, looking over this selection, I may not leave it up, though the work is copywritten. Please enjoy, this early Christmas present.
Blue Lines Chapter 12: Chance

We got together, like, the first week of school and through this I have actually become accustomed to being alone. If he’s not at practice, he’s with his boys and the few times I see him, it’s always conversation about basketball or trying to get ass.”
“And the lack thereof doesn’t do anything for you two.”
“No,” she pursed her lips realizing that she had answered his latent question, “plus all the rumors,” she continued. “I confronted him and I know that he’s lying to me but I don’t care.”
“It seems like you keep mentioning that he isn’t around. Do you think that it would have been different if he was there and spent more time with you?”

In this truly…eventful year, I am thankful for:
My family (all of ya),
My neices and nephews, although they go love above,
My friends,
The Health of my family and friends, especially those who had some troubles,
Smiles,
Words,
Love,
Friendship,
The small things that mean alot to me,
The small things that are insignificant, but mean alot,
My colleagues,
My lineage…all of it,
My successes,
My failures,
The opportunities I have (regardless of how I play them),
YOU,
Not really that much more to it,

K.S. 6/2/11
Empty Hands
You invade my dreams,
My thoughts,
My smiles,
My life,
But, I’m left with empty hands.

You are my good,
My bad,
My wins,
My loses,
But, I’m left with empty hands.

You are the best idea,
Best concept,
Best inspiration,
Best excuse,
But, I’m left with empty hands.

You are in my eye,
The softest skin, that’s not touched,
The fullest lips, that are not kissed,
The deepest…aaah, never to be known,
But, I look down, and I see that I’m left with empty hands.

Well…I’m trying to focus on writing what I need to tomorrow, but hopefully this exercise will allow me to focus my thoughts in the right direction. I used an amended selection from Blue Lines to try to get this point across.

Edited and adjusted Excerpt:

Blue Lines Blog – Issue #17 Practice Fiction

How did I come to this week’s blog? Well I caught up on some television watching and came across a quote to open a writing project…practice. Then I watched a movie, and scrapped the firs blog, to write a new more personal blog…as I began to write it, I remembered giving elements of that story in prior blogs, bits and pieces, but elements of the same story just the same. Therefore, I went back to my first idea, and that is still in the works, therefore I grabbed a practice piece about bystanders or witnesses to a scene in Blue Lines.Reader be warned, there is some strong language and content.

Jason rubbed his head and pulled his coat collar to his neck.
“Damn I didn’t know it got this cold in San Fran,” he whispered as he darted across Howard to get to Starbucks. He looked out to see if his co-worker Will was waiting for him at the coffee shop. After Jason was positioned under the awning he shook off and wiped the water from his sunglasses and face and frowned. The sky was an electric blue and rain fell ferociously. Continue reading →

Blue Lines Blog # 16 Anatomy of a Book Cover

Blue Lines Cover2 Proof       I want total control of my project…what exactly does that mean. In trying hard to express that Blue Lines if a labor of love, and the project that I feel is 100% me, meaning that the content, and expression of this work conveys my feelings, and thoughts and the story I wish to present.
In trying to keep this thinking in place, roughly 3 years ago, in late 2006 I had an idea for the book cover of my manuscript. Although at this time, I do not remember the true inspiration that guided my to lay out the initial template, there was something that I had seen that prompted my action on the cover. During down time I was playing around with a picture that I had of a woman’s profile, using that basic paint accessory that comes on a PC.

“I’m not what I ought to be; Not what I want to be; Not what I am going to be; But I’m thankful I am not what I used to be.”  – John Wooden

2:04AM 10/4/09

When I first read this quote, I thought that I had the basic essence of the statement, but a series of normal events proved that there was more to take from this statement by the legendary basketball coach.

Because some of these items relate back to Blue Lines and to continue to not making any use of real names of the living (unless I have mentioned, or interviewed them in the past) I offer this again…

Because of my intellectual property, and my goal for this to begin my being published, I have to be vague in many areas of the story’s actual content.  I would like to add that should anyone be offended by ANYTHING that I go forward with: 1) if it will offend you, please read objectively, my goal is not and has never been to embarrass or disrespect anyone; 2) although I am explaining why Blue Lines was written, this is a public forum and names will be omitted to protect the innocent; 3) if you know me now, and did not then, this also applies as this relates to why I wrote my work.
