One of my favorite authors, and the author of a book I love, “Fahrenheit 451,” passes on. I was disappointed when the planned adaptation in the 90’s never came to fruition.

JOHN ROGERS, Associated Press
Updated 07:59 a.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ray Bradbury, the science fiction-fantasy master who transformed his childhood dreams and Cold War fears into telepathic Martians, lovesick sea monsters, and, in uncanny detail, the high-tech, book-burning future of “Fahrenheit 451,” has died. He was 91.

He died Tuesday night, his daughter said Wednesday. Alexandra Bradbury did not have additional details.

Although slowed in recent years by a stroke that meant he had to use a wheelchair, Bradbury remained active into his 90s, turning out new novels, plays, screenplays and a volume of poetry. He wrote every day in the basement office of his home in the Cheviot Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles and appeared from time to time at bookstores, public library fundraisers and other literary events around Los Angeles.

“Libraries raised me. I don’t believe in colleges and universities. I believe in libraries because most students don’t have any money. When I graduated from high school, it was during the Depression and we had no money. I couldn’t go to college, so I went to the library three days a week for 10 years.”

His writings ranged from horror and mystery to humor and sympathetic stories about the Irish, blacks and Mexican-Americans. Bradbury also scripted John Huston’s 1956 film version of “Moby Dick” and wrote for “The Twilight Zone” and other television programs, including “The Ray Bradbury Theater,” for which he adapted dozens of his works.

The manuscript Blue Lines is the fictional coming of age narrative of a young California woman Key Yemaya Walker, and her 2 year growing journey through school, love, and life period piece, written by Kenneth Suffern, Jr., taking place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between the years of 1997 – 1998. Loosely based on true events, and experiences during that time, told through the eyes and voice of the main female protagonist, a freshman first attending the school.

Blue Lines Blog: It hurts to see MY Atlanta Thrashers go.

When Philips Arena first opened, my good friend who left the Georgia Dome, and went on to work for Philips Arena would take me to see the new hockey team in Atlanta, and the first team since the Atlanta Flames had left the Omni. In 2003 the process began for the sale of the Hawks and Thrashers to Atlanta Spirit.

I was lucky enough to work for the Thrashers, skate (and skate again, and break my arm) on their ice. See them clinch their first ever playoffs (missed working Playoffs due to above 100 temperature). Work, attend our hosted 2008 NHL All-Star game in Atlanta at Philips Arena. Wear the Thrashers jersey. It does hurt that something we worked so hard on, now moves on to Winnepeg.

I will miss the Thrashers, and today is a sad day for Atlanta…
I will remember Dan Kamal’s Calls,
Seeing Thrash-Heart during my first years seeing the team,
My first Thrashers jersey (my first NHL jersey was the Tampa Bay Lightning, since we had no team, and that was the closest),
Listening to them on 680 the Fan, 790 the Zone, then 680 the Fan again, XM Radio,

From AP and ESPN.com News services.
True North Sports and Entertainment has completed its deal to purchase the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers, clearing the way to move them to Winnipeg.

True North announced the deal at a news conference Tuesday at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, the arena the team will call home next season, pending league approval.

This song sums up how I feel…if you’ve seen the movie, think of that scene…it helps.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Relatives and friends of Lorenzen Wright gathered Wednesday and grieved for the former NBA player who has been missing for 10 days, as police investigated the discovery of a man’s body outside of Memphis.

Wright’s uncle, Curtis Wright, told The Associated Press that police called the player’s father, Herb Wright, on Wednesday afternoon with the news he had died.

Sgt. Alyssa Macon-Moore of the Memphis Police Department wrote in an e-mail to the AP that police were investigating the death of an unidentified man beside a wooded area about 15 miles south of downtown Memphis. Asked if the man was Wright, she wrote they could not confirm the victim’s identity Wednesday night.

The family issued a statement through a cousin of Lorenzen Wright, Camella Logan: “Lorenzen’s family has come together to mourn his loss and honor his legacy. We appreciate your thoughts, prayers and condolences as they are comforting at this very difficult time. Additionally, we ask that you please respect our privacy as we try to cope with his sudden loss.” Continue reading →
