These are the products of my insomnia. This, a very personal piece, has been an idea/thought/concept that once a revelation was made to me, I looked back at the events over the course of time that it affected.

First, before incorrectly interpreted, this is not about a love interest, past love, current love in the sense that it may seem, from there, you can make your own interpretations of what it means, or does not mean for you.

Many of my pieces are personal, however when dealing with writing about oneself or about love (muse), like Blue Lines, it may in part be a release or an expression. This piece, is ironic, at how thoughts and favor can easily change though the person decides to omit all of the facts.

“Judge-ment”
KS 04/03/12
Your eyes looked upon me,
I said it was human to judge,
You said it was not,
As you interpreted me,
You liked me then,
Just not my words,

You told me not to judge,
I lay this at your feet,

You claimed spirituality,
Openness,
As you matched,
Religion,
With myth,
With mysticism,

You told me not to judge,
I lay this at your feet,

You took the love I had,
You crumpled it behind your dark glasses,
Forgot the:
Unyielding,
Respect,
Joy, Continue reading →

“Just a day”
K.S. 2/2/12
If I send you flowers,
Are they just a homogenized practice,
Or were they well thought for you,

If I take you to dinner,
Is it because I have to,
Or is it well thought out, because it’s you,

If I send you that treat,
Is it products packaged because of the day,
Or are they your favorite confections affectionately given to you,

If I write you a poem,
Is it just because I write,
Or are the choice of words especially crafted for you,

If I make love to you,
Is it because of a function of the “day,”
Or do I consume your body with love for you,

I do not do this because the world tells me to,
I do this because thoughts of you are motivation,
I do not do this because a day says I should,
I do this because of you.

The manuscript Blue Lines is the fictional coming of age narrative of a young California woman Key Yemaya Walker, and her 2 year growing journey through school, love, and life period piece, written by Kenneth Suffern, Jr., taking place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between the years of 1997 – 1998. Loosely based on true events, and experiences during that time, told through the eyes and voice of the main female protagonist, a freshman first attending the school

Foto Fridays – 2011 Year In Review – Photos (Smudge and Rainy Canvas) – Prose (“To The Individual” and “Twin”)

Foto Fridays may have been my most inconsistent post this year, in so far as publishing regularly. At some point this year, it evolved into a photograph with accompanying poetry. Here are my two favorites from this year, in this category.

“To The Individual”
KS 7/11

We sat over coffee,
Your face still radiant as you gazed,
You had a smile I had never seen,
A joy I did not remember,
How did we get here,
…it’s not the touch,
…not the want,
…not the fears…gone,
…not the choice,
It just was,
Your hair waved,
I was at a loss for words,
I smiled and sipped the lukewarm coffee,
Your long elegant fingers pressed forward,
A tattered envelope, frayed by time,
“I kept it,” you confessed,
In my handwriting it began…
…”to the individual who is reading this…”

Twin
K.S. 6/24/11
You were born in my mind,
Twins sharing the same thoughts,
Our era was the same time,
Our likes are the same likes,
Our vices are the same vices,

When I look at my own reflection, I see you…twin…coincidence,

You were cut from my cloth,
Our pattern was drawn up time ago,
From it there were two,
Joined at mind and thought,
With the mold destroyed after we were complete,

Blue Lines Blog – Word Write Inspired by words from Nalo J. – “Infatuation?”

Thanks for the words to start this piece sis.

“Infatuation?”
KS – 7/21/11

I eyed you, secretly,
My mind focused on something more than your heart,
Your neck arched as you listened to the band,
Your chest easy as you breathed,
Your inhibitions down,
The band played,
Was this love, or are you just my infatuation,

Us crowded standing in the back,
A whiff of your scent wafted past me,
Making the cigarette and cigar smoke tolerable,
Tired, I deviously wrapped my arms around your neck,
As my breath warmly pressed against your neck,
You jerked forward,
Then softly nestled back…
Was this love, or are you just my infatuation,

Foto Fridays and Prose – Back x “Open Eyes”

Lately I’ve been looking at my works, and increased output in crafting ideas I may dream about, or wake up with, and just put pen to paper, so to speak. Everything I write also cannot be about YOU, like a current fave “Our” Shared Morning. Or those not about the muse, Broken Promises. Sometime you have to take a step back, and I have to stop speaking to the mirror that is you, and speak to that person that I see in that reflection.

The window was open,
I didn’t see you anymore,
I didn’t remember you anymore,
The time that your eyes were clear,
You smile was clear,
Your heart was clear,
The time that parts of you did not live in,
Were not shared in,
Distant cities in this country,
Not just love of her,
But, love of there,
And there,
And there,
And there,

Didn’t think I would have anything to post, then I saw a picture that made me want to write something.

Beauty,
Your eyes on a summer day,
Slowly my mind drifts away,
Your heart,
Not mine, but maybe,
Thoughts, can be,
Truth, in our future,
Make your want truer,
Your skin,
Caramel bronze,
Sun-kissed, hands in my palms,
Ripe for my hands,
Can I take you to distant lands,
Or just the sand, on the beach,
Draped blanket, you my reach,
As I stare at you,
All I want is you,
My beauty is you.

Blue Lines Blog – Prose – “Tempt”

“…Blue…I need a friend not an enemy. Worry bout my future…”

It’s funny how you hear, and get messages that you want to hear, when you want to hear them. I say this because the above message resonates more than some high school or college age girl who follows me on twitter, that posted a lyric from Goapele’s “Closer,” I’m not R. Kelly, sorry, at the same time that the song was playing on my iPod, or the quote another friend offered, “daydreaming through most of the day, composing songs and poetry in your head.” And another, “Show a plenty of genuine love, and watch how loved you’ll feel in return.”

I woke up, with a song in my head, wondering whether I should try that, yet, I didn’t commit that song to paper as I chose to catch a few more Z’s before heading into the office. So with songs, the urge to write something, and other mind numbing items, I just offer something. Plus this neck thing going on with me right now. (by the way, typing the word ‘thing’ goes in a nice circle)

I know I sent a flutter to your heart,
A smile,
Some care,
The bit of what I offer,
My hope, and wish for you,
You tempt my heart, but right now we’re far apart,

I woke up this morning, with these thoughts seared into my mind, therefore I had to turn it into something.

The first time is coincidence, the second time, was fate facilitated by the first, and everything else, is a message we’re just not listening to.

You were born in my mind,
Twins sharing the same thoughts,
Our era was the same time,
Our likes are the same likes,

Blue Lines Blog: Prose – “Slow Like Honey” Thanks Holly B.

This poem was precipitated by my asking for a word, and my friend Holly providing it. I’ll admit, that was a strange word for me to start with, and halfway through, I wasn’t to pleased with the direction, but I think it panned out.

“Goaaaaal,” floated off your lips,
Slow like honey,

Awkward, not that the words mattered,
Your eyes averted, your hat pulled down and tattered,
You raised that glass to your pouted lips and took a sip,
Slow like honey,

Your eyes in mine, the lights drawn low,
Deliberate movements, love taken slow,
I tasted you, and you dripped from my lips,
Slow like honey,

Streetlights through the blinds, draped your form,
Our coital embrace, was a violent storm,
The uncertainty we shared was mutually shorn,
Slow like honey,

You awoke in the morning, tired and disabled,
Trying to wrap your mind around last night, you were unable,
I did not run away, I left my number on the table,
Before I exited, slow like honey.

Bare you stand, leaning, gazing out the window,
I gaze upon the curve of back and hips,
The morning haze blues you,
Your creamy complexion in a darker hue,
Waiting for your sun,
We share thoughts of our sin,
Our Love and Lust,
Our Touch and Taste,
…I want to go again,
Brief memories of your flesh in my hands,
Soft butter and melted chocolate,
You look back, curls hanging loosely,
Your shadowed pout becomes a smile,
And I see your female silhouette
