Text Tuesdays – New Prose – “Quiet”

29 Tuesday Sep 2015

Posted by bluelineswork in Text Tuesdays

Hush,
There nothing left to say,
Nothing to share,
Nothing for display,

Shhh,
Leave the thoughts unsaid,
Ideas in your head,
Leave written words unread,

Still,
Not to share,
Noise spared,
Peace in the air.

The manuscript Blue Lines is the fictional coming of age narrative of a young California woman Key Yemaya Walker, and her 2 year growing journey through school, love, and life period piece, written by Kenneth Suffern, Jr., taking place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between the years of 1997 – 1998. Loosely based on true events, and experiences during that time, told through the eyes and voice of the main female protagonist, a freshman first attending the school.

Based on a conversation with my best friend last night and subsequent article that I read upon his recommendation, I felt compelled to share some of the best covers that I have heard. I wanted to identify cover songs that create a new sonic experience that often confuses the listener to whom the song should originally be attributed to. Common examples that come to mind are Jimi Hendrix classic rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Along the Watchtower,” and Johnny Cash’s iconic cover of Nine Inch Nails opus “Hurt,” which I would have preferred to put in the top slot.

The following twenty covers re-imagine and recreate the original songs. In many cases, they reinvent the songs and the new versions make them listenable music. Continue reading →

I remember the first ONE MusicFest in 2010. For a first time festival, it was well put together, and had a great lineup that featured Atlanta’s Underground Queen Joi Gilliam, Goapele, De La Soul, and Common. The festival was well spaced, and accounted for the rain that fell mid-festival. In subsequent years ONE MusicFest has called Park Tavern, the Masquerade Music Park, and Aaron’s Amphitheater at Lakewood home.

I am practicing writing pieces in anticipation of the A&J Wedding this Fall. This is my first piece.

9/15/15
What you get is what you see,
Years seem like days as we approach our union,
Our separate lives become one,
Our different becomes the same,
Who made this choice,
We said yes… Continue reading →
